Kastav Carnival atmosphere ideal for Croatia holidays in Rijeka

Kastav Carnival atmosphere ideal for Croatia holidays in Rijeka With January just around the corner, the Kastav Carnival near Rijeka is not one to miss for anyone seeking a slice of culture as part of a Croatia holiday.

Beginning on January 17th, St Anthony’s day in Croatia, the small town of Kastav, near Rijeka is transformed into a unique procession of colours and sounds that remains distinctively Balkan.

Tourists are invited to gaze in wonder at the unique mix of grotesque masks that make up much of the parades and dances witnessed over the course of the festival.

These masked dancers are known as the Zvoncari and their iconic masks have become a staple of the annual festival.

Located just 10 kilometres from Rijeka, the village is a perfect stop off whether during the festival or any time throughout the long summer months.

The official website of Kastav boasts that the town “has a rich tradition and a recognisable identity,” which is most evident in the fine wines and cuisine made famous in the region.ADNFCR-2466-ID-801252766-ADNFCR
