The Beatnuts set for a Croatia holiday return

The best kept secret in US hip-hop are set for a return to the big stage at this year’s Outlook festival, following almost two years of relative inactivity.

With music fans from across Europe descending on Pula this August for a Croatia holiday unlike any other, Outlook festival is promising to be an event to remember.

But while the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop and Phife are likely to grab many of the headlines among the partygoers on patrol in Pula, in truth, its another of the event’s headliners that are most worthy of attention.

Jerry Tineo aka JuJu and Lester Fernandez aka Psycho Les have been making some of the finest hip-hop beats since way back in 1989, under the name of The Beatnuts.

During that time, they have enjoyed commercial and critical success, yet to this day remain devoted to their underground roots and live performances.

The less informed among you have probably heard some of their cuts in the past, with the duo’s 1999 hit Watch Out Now using the same sample as Jennifer Lopez’s single Jenny from the Block.

Arriving in Croatia for the first time, the duo are likely to make the kind of waves you would expect with a sailing holiday in Croatia.

The appearance is hotly anticipated too, with the duo having avoided any of the limelight since 2009, when a play focusing on their lives and upbringing was produced.

Today, they remain respected figures in the US rap scene, with A Tribe Called Quest founder Q Tip regularly referencing their influence on the hip hop scene.

Outlook and the striking architecture of the Pula venue could provide the ideal platform for a return from one of music’s best kept and best loved secrets.
