Split festival to take Adriatic cruise passengers back in time

People planning to stop off in Split during an Adriatic cruise this year will have the opportunity to experience a festival being held near the city.

Sinj Day will take place on August 8th to celebrate a significant moment in Split's history.

In August 1715, the fortress of Sinj near Split was under attack by some 60,000 Turkish soldiers, who were fighting against only a few hundred defenders of the castle.

According to legend, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to the forces that were under attack, helping them to win the battle.

People taking Adriatic cruises will be able to join in with crowds of pilgrims visiting Sinj in August to attend a feast and enjoy all sorts of entertainment.

Highlights of the day include the Sinj Alka, a contest that sees horsemen attempting to strike an iron ring with a three-metre-long lance.

There will be various other festival events and celebrations for people on Croatia sailing holidays to experience, including live music and dancing.
