Croatia holiday 'ideal for football lovers'

Croatia holiday ideal for football lovers Football fans may want to go on a Croatia holiday to see an unusual take on the beautiful game.

The fifth annual ancient Roman football games are to be held in Trilj, only a short journey away from the historic city of Split, on May 29th.

Players will be dressed in "authentic period costume" for the games, which have been organised by the regional sports association GAZ, the Croatian Times reported.

Actors playing the emperor Diocletian and his wife Prisca will oversee the game, while there will be Roman centurions protecting the pitch.

According to the newspaper, the first football artefact was found in a nearby village, after archaeologists unearthed a Roman tomb depicting a small boy holding a ball.

Lovers of the beautiful game will find plenty of other sporty activities to do.

The diversity of the landscape makes the area popular for hiking, climbing, walking and cycling.

Those who simply want to relax after taking in ancient Roman football manoeuvres might want to opt for a Croatia sailing holiday.
