James Bainbridge, author of the Lonely Planet book A Year of Festivals, said that tourism is beginning to develop around cultural traditions and events that are celebrated annually.

Mr Bainbridge said that experiencing such events allows visitors to learn more about the true nature and character of their destination.

"Festivals are a great way to get under a culture's skin, so you can go to a country and go to a big name festival that's taking place in that country," he commented.

"It's a great way to see a concentrated presentation of that country's traditions, performances and everything that makes that country unique in one place."
