Croatia holidays: Folk singing tradition added to Unesco list

Croatia holidays: Folk singing tradition added to Unesco list Travellers planning Croatia holidays next year might be interested in searching for a local tradition that has received official protection from Unesco, the United Nations' cultural organisation.

Ojkanje singing was added to the UN's list of cultural traditions that are in need of urgent protection.

Found in the Dalmatian hinterland, the distinctive singing style sees two or more people using a voice-shaking technique that originates in the throat.

Also added to Unesco's 'intangible heritage' list is the craft of gingerbread making in northern Croatia, another tradition that travellers might be able to learn about during an Adriatic cruise.

Commenting on the importance of the project, Cecile Duvelle, the head of Unesco's intangible heritage section, told the Daily Telegraph: "We are not aiming to keep things stuck in the past, instead the intention is to safeguard things that have a value in contemporary life."

Travellers can learn more about Croatian culture and history by visiting locations such as Zadar, Hvar and Dubrovnik during an Adriatic cruise.ADNFCR-2466-ID-800243613-ADNFCR
