Adriatic cruises: Island could be named 'Facebook'

A small island near the Adriatic cruise hotspot of Hvar could soon have a new nickname - Facebook.

The mayor of Hvar suggested naming the isle of Veli Vodnjak after the world-famous social networking site in an attempt to boost its profile among people taking Croatia holidays.

Pjerino Bebic sent the proposal to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and also invited him to pay a visit to Hvar, reports the Croatian Times, citing daily newspaper 24 Sata.

"We will have more information when he answers, which we hope will be soon," said Mr Bebic.

Hvar is a highly popular destination among travellers taking Adriatic cruises and has also played host to several famous figures in the past, including fashion designer Giorgio Armani and Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone.

One sailing holiday itinerary begins in the historic coastal city of Dubrovnik and includes visits to Korcula, Hvar, Trstenik, Mljet and Sipan, providing the opportunity to take in some of Croatia's most impressive island scenery.
