Mostar is the city of contrasts, wide roads, narrow streets, the traditional Kujundžiluk (old bazaar) - a city in which the culture and art of the east and west meet.
The most magnificent monument is the Stari Most (Old Bridge), built in 1566 according to the plans of Hayruddin, the great Turkish builder of the 16th century.
When the Stari Most, or Old Bridge, collapsed from tank shelling in 1993, it was like the heart was ripped out of most Mostar natives. Now, more than a decade later, the beautiful stone structure that had spanned the Neretva River for over four centuries once again arches across its enchanting waters. The bridge is Mostar's core and its reconstruction means that life is slowly but surely returning to normal in what is most certainly the most beautiful city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From Makarska we drive along the picturesque coastline through the seaside resorts of Makarska Riviera up to the fertile Neretva River Delta and inland till we reach Počitelj, a mystic little town with an ancient Turkish fortification. After a short rest we continue our drive along the river valley to Mostar, “a window to the Orient” and an important trade centre during Turkish rule. A guided tour will show us the town highlights. We leave Mostar late in the afternoon driving across the Biokovo Massif which offers a magnificent view of the Central Dalmatian islands and arrive in Split in early evening.
