Flying – The fast and comfortable way
There are very few direct flights linking Split with Athens. Check out skyscanner.net for detailed options between Croatia and Greece. Keep in mind also that Bratislava and Vienna are an easy 2 hr transfer by bus if you need to fly into one and out of the other. Flights also operate from Thessaloniki in northern Greece and there are also summer flights to Greek islands, such as Crete, Mykonos, Santorini and Kefalonia.
Train – The sightseeing option
There are trains from Athens to Thessaloniki – Belgrade (Serbia) – Bar (Montenegro) – and then a bus up to Dubrovnik or Split.
Deutsche Bahn tend to have the best online timetables available. There are variations to this with buses available from Belgrade to Sarajevo and through to Mostar and then Split. For bus timetables click here:
With this route it is best to allow extra days to take in the stopover points along the way as it would be a shame to miss out all of the above towns, especially Belgrade.
Ferry – The slow but convenient option
Ferries operate from Greece to Italy and then across to Croatia. There are no direct ferries between the two countries. On the western side of Greece, Patras is the main ferry port (or alternatively Igoumenitsa) which will take you to either Bari or Ancona taking approximately 22hrs.
