michaelkalusekbridge2We are often asked for advice from independent travellers for the best options on travelling to and from Croatia and one of the most common questions has to be travelling to and from Greece.

The best option is to take our Balkan Road Trip Croatia to Greece Pass from Corfu to Dubrovnik (or the other way around). This 3-day tour not only gets you from Croatia to Greece (or vice versa) but it also takes you around the best parts of 2 Balkan gems: Albania and Montenegro. Click here for more info.

If you don't wish to take this option then we have put together a guide to assist with your travel plans. We have outlined the routes from Greece – but keep in mind you just reverse this for the other direction!

Essentially, there are 4 options:

Balkan Road Trip Croatia to Greece Pass – The best way!

Yes, we know, of course we would say this is the best route! But honestly, it is so hard to get from Greece to Croatia and it is such a shame to miss out on the fantastic sights that Montenegro and Albania have to offer that we thought we would put together this Road Trip to make getting between Croatia and Greece simple, convenient and pack the route full of Balkan surprises. This tour lasts 3-days, is only £199 and includes expert local guide, mini-bus transport, 3-star hotels and breakfast. Find out more here.

Flying – The fast and comfortable way

There are very few direct flights linking Split with Athens. Check out skyscanner.net for detailed options between Croatia and Greece. Keep in mind also that Bratislava and Vienna are an easy 2 hr transfer by bus if you need to fly into one and out of the other. Flights also operate from Thessaloniki in northern Greece and there are also summer flights to Greek islands, such as Crete, Mykonos, Santorini and Kefalonia.

Train – The sightseeing option

There are trains from Athens to Thessaloniki – Belgrade (Serbia) – Bar (Montenegro) – and then a bus up to Dubrovnik or Split.

Deutsche Bahn tend to have the best online timetables available. There are variations to this with buses available from Belgrade to Sarajevo and through to Mostar and then Split. For bus timetables click here:

With this route it is best to allow extra days to take in the stopover points along the way as it would be a shame to miss out all of the above towns, especially Belgrade.

Ferry – The slow but convenient option

Ferries operate from Greece to Italy and then across to Croatia. There are no direct ferries between the two countries.
On the western side of Greece, Patras is the main ferry port (or alternatively Igoumenitsa) which will take you to either Bari or Ancona taking approximately 22hrs.

Greece to Italy Ferry Link

From here the overnight ferries from Bari take you to Dubrovnik or ferries from Ancona go to Split taking approximately 10hrs.

www.blueline-ferries.com - run locally and across to Italy.
www.snav.it - is a fast ferry service across to Italy.
