Skipper Training Program

Skipper your own yacht this Summer!

Our Skipper Training Program has been developed to offer an opportunity for new sailors to gain the necessary qualifications to competently operate a sailing vessel in Croatia.

This course is designed to give you the required knowledge to pass the Category B License exam, as well as give you the required practical knowledge to skipper a yacht yourself as a bareboat yacht charter. More information on bareboat charter can be found here.

The course is suitable for participants that have a basic understanding of sailing and for those that may have completed qualifications some time ago and would like to refresh their sailing knowledge.

The course consists of 2 elements the theory and practical.

3 Day Theory

  • Date: 10 - 12 May, 2017
  • Course Cost: 300 Euros per person
  • Location: Split
  • Accommodation: Not included *Can be arranged onboard a yacht, subject to availability
Key Elements:

The theory component of the course outlines the required knowledge you will need to pass the Category B License (for more information about Category B Licenses, please read the FAQ). You will need to complete a medical check, required for the licensing process, if you wish to sit the final exam and receive your license. The cost of the medical check is an additional expense.

7 Day Practical

  • Date: 13 - 20 May, 2017
  • Course Cost: 500 Euros per person
  • Location: ACI Marina - Split
  • Accommodation: Onboard Yacht
Key Elements:

The practical component will give you the sailing experience you will need to confidently navigate and skipper a yacht in Croatia. During the week we will discuss and plan a suitable itinerary based on the weather and group experience and requirements. Subject to weather, 2 nights will be spent in a marina outside of ACI Split and potentially an overnight on anchor or buoy.

As well as yacht handling you will also learn how to dock in marinas and ports which often requires the most focus and experience for new skippers. Although there is limited tide movement in the Adriatic there does exist unique weather patterns which also pose a potential risk to inexperienced skippers and this is covered within the planning element of the course.

You can expect a high element of hands on participation to ensure the experience gained gives you the confidence to take charge as a skipper on your own yacht.

Arriving at the Theory component

The theory component begins at 9am on the 10th of May. Further information regarding the location of this training session will be provided during the booking stage. These sessions will usually be completed by 4pm daily.

Arriving at the Practical component

Check-in is at ACI Marina, Split, by 2:00pm on the 13th of May. You will meet your instructor, participate in a safety briefing, and organise your provisions and itinerary for the week. You are expected to depart ACI Marina by 6pm.

Do I get a license at the end of this program?

You can sit an exam to apply for a Category B License. Whilst it is not compulsory to have sailing experience, or theoretical knowledge, we strongly recommend you attend both components of this course to increase your chances of passing, and increase your confidence sailing a yacht.

What is a Category B License?

The holder of a Category B License is:
  • Authorised to operate pleasure boats up to 30GT or charter boats up to 30GT without professional crew
  • Able to operate in navigation area III and IV

Licensing is conducted by the harbour master offices throughout Croatia and we normally use Split harbour master. Suitable examination time and dates are subject to availability and is normally conducted on a day during the practical element of the course.

What yachts will we use for the practical training element?

The yachts we use for training are Beneteau Cyclades 43. They are 43 feet in length, have fully battened mainsail and furling jib. Accommodation will be provided onboard throughout the duration of the course. The yachts have 4 cabins and 2 WC/Showers onboard. They sleep a maximum of 8 people although we will have a maximum of 6 people training plus skipper. More information on our Cyclades Yachts can be found here.

What is the accommodation like onboard?

Accommodation onboard is provided for the practical component of the program and is based on twin share cabins. The cabins are normally double beds (with separate mattresses, blankets and sheets side by side). It is best to attend as a couple or be prepared to share a double bed with another person. A single supplement is available on request and subject to availability. All linen and towels are provided.

Are food and drinks included?

Food and drinks are not included throughout the program. During the Practical component we normally operate a kitty system onboard whereby money is put into a kitty for drinks, breakfast and lunches whilst onboard the yacht. Meals in restaurants or off the boat are covered by individuals. Food for the skipper is traditionally included in the kitty.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need 2 recent passport sized photos if you wish to sit your Category B License exam.

What other costs can I expect to incur?

  • Exam costs of circa 500 kuna per person (approx 50 Euros)
  • Food & drinks throughout the program
  • Local Tax - 7 Euros per person (theory component only)
